2017-01-17 · Around 1970, Sweden was the fourth- richest country in the world (in terms of per capita income), after Switzerland, the United States and Luxemburg. Social Democrats had been in power since the early 1930s and Sweden was widely touted as proof that socialism – at least the democratic, Swedish version – could work very well. We want a Sweden where we together rejoice in our success and together help out in adversity. We will never give space to Islamism or any other extremism, this is a land of democracy and equality. In our Sweden, we are proud of our culture and our traditions. We value and wish to cherish what we inherited from previous generations. Sweden’s extraordinary wave of reforms in the 1970s, an era of explosive radicalism, reveal the achievements — and the limits — of social democracy.
